I think that we were assigned the In Our Time collage project because it encouraged us to think outside the box and take our own creative paths. We were able to create any message we desired through the use of modern images and icons. During the duration of this project, I learned how to use the basics of design to create balance and unity in a piece. I also learned how to use images to express a theme or meaning without being blunt or obvious. Specifically, I learned how to utilize Photoshop to my advantage. This was my first time printing out tiles and then painting over them, and I want to use this technique again in the future. I used a Sharpie to make all of the small red dots for the Ugg boots. I haven't used this technique since the 6th grade and it was interesting to freshen up my skills.
In the aspect of what I could have done better, I think that the concealing of the creases between the paper tiles could have been smoother. The edges of the paper are also curling up, so they could have been better attached to the canvas. The blue background could have been improved by adding more detail in the upper right-hand corner. One major obstacle that I had to overcome was figuring out how to paint the Ugg boots. The small dots were covered up by the paint, and they were too detailed to use a paintbrush to produce them. I eventually came to the conclusion that using a projector would be the best option. I projected the image on my computer onto the canvas and used a red Sharpie to make the dots. In the future, I think that this project could be enhanced by going into more detail on the artists we are influenced by. I feel like it would help us to better understand the style of these artists and incorporate them into our project.
I think that I earned an A on this project because I worked very hard and finished it out of class, my artwork contains a full range of value, the artwork contains a message (influence of stereotypes on teenage girls), and my work was turned in and completed on time.
